Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has argued that no single artist can single-handedly take Ghanaian music to the global stage, stressing the need for a collective effort within the music industry.
According to the award-winning musician, while individual artistes can break international barriers and create global visibility for Ghanaian music, sustained global growth requires collaboration and a coordinated movement involving artistes, industry players and other stakeholders.
Black Sherif made the remarks while reflecting on the evolution of his music career and the broader direction of Ghanaian music.
He noted that the responsibility of projecting Ghanaian music internationally should not rest on the shoulders of one artiste.
Rather, he believes the industry must work collectively to create an ecosystem capable of supporting Ghanaian music beyond the country’s borders.
Black Sherif has himself become one of Ghana’s most recognizable musical exports in recent years, with his music earning audiences beyond Ghana and collaborations and performances extending his reach across international markets.
However, he maintains that his individual success should not be viewed as the solution to the wider challenge facing Ghana’s music industry.
The musician also reflected on his artistic journey, describing his current musical direction as a form of “reintroduction.”
He explained that his evolution as an artiste has been shaped by different periods of his life and career, including his early musical experiments, his work around 2019 and the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
