The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has begun efforts to rebuild its grassroots structures and restore confidence among supporters ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The newly elected Ashanti Regional Chairman, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, says the party’s recovery must begin with a return to the values of discipline, integrity, responsibility and hard work.
Addressing constituency vice-chairpersons at an engagement in Kumasi, Mr Appiah said the NPP’s past electoral successes were largely built on those principles, which he said must once again guide the party’s activities.
He urged constituency executives to strengthen collaboration at the grassroots and work closely with their respective chairpersons and other local leaders to reconnect with supporters who had become disillusioned with the party.
“I am urging all of us to go back to our roots, where we exemplified the ideals of discipline, integrity, responsibility and hard work,” he said.
Mr Appiah said the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections required a concerted effort to rebuild its structures and improve voter mobilisation in the region.
He noted that the NPP lost more than 1.1 million votes in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 elections, arguing that the decline was largely linked to low voter turnout rather than a complete change in political allegiance.
He therefore tasked constituency vice-chairpersons with playing a leading role in rebuilding the party’s support base and strengthening its presence in communities across the region.
According to him, the ongoing engagements form part of efforts to promote reconciliation within the party and position the NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for victory.
Reconciliation efforts
Responding on behalf of the constituency executives, the Mampong Constituency Vice-Chairperson, S. O. Frimpong, commended Mr Appiah for what he described as a proactive approach to post-election reconciliation.
Mr Frimpong said Mr Appiah’s decision to reach out to his main electoral opponent and other defeated aspirants demonstrated his commitment to building an inclusive regional administration.
He said such efforts were important to strengthening party cohesion and restoring confidence among NPP supporters in the Ashanti Region.
Stakeholder engagement
Mr Appiah’s engagement with the constituency executives was followed by a series of courtesy calls from stakeholder groups at his temporary office in Kumasi.
The groups included representatives of major market associations, members of the NPP Loyal Ladies campaign wing and radio morning show hosts from across the metropolis.
The groups congratulated him on his election and urged him to implement the strategic vision he outlined during his campaign.
In response, Mr Appiah reiterated the need for sustained cooperation among party stakeholders, saying unity and collective effort would be essential to strengthening the NPP’s position in the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2028 elections.
