The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the politicisation of the murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama, describing it as “unfortunate”.
Captain Mahama was brutally lynched and charred to death last month after he was allegedly mistaken as an armed robber.
He was with the 5 Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces, Burma Camp, Accra but on detachment duties at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central region where he was killed by marauding residents there.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a statement on May 31, 2017 laid the blame for the “heinous and callous” lynching to death of Captain Mahama “at the doorsteps of president Akufo-Addo.”
This, according to the acting General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu is hapless and insensitive and must be condemned strongly.
That notwithstanding, he called on all parties to refrain from such conduct.
Addressing a news conference Monday June 5, 2017 in Accra, he said: “Having taken a serious view of all that has happened regarding this unfortunate incident. We mourn with the family and we would never…I repeat never play politics with the death of such an innocent soul.
“We expect that other political parties will also refrain from playing politics with the painful death of a fellow citizen.”
Expressing the party’s condolence to the bereaved family again, he announced that government will be meeting today, Monday, to take a “decision and announce” the plans that the state has for the late captain Mahama’s family.
Meanwhile, the police announced that 42 persons have been arrested in connection with the horrendous murder of late captain Mahama.
The Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, DSP Sheila Kesse Buckman, told Starr News the youngest among the suspects is a 12-year-old while the oldest is a 57–year-old man.
She added that 35 persons of the 42 have been arraigned before court and the Police are closely monitoring investigations from the Police headquarters.
Captain Mahama will be laid to rest Friday June 9, 2017.
