The Ghana Police Service has arrested a commercial bus driver and his assistant after uncovering a large cache of ammunition on a vehicle travelling from Accra to Tamale.
The suspects, 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali and his accomplice Mohammed Jabir, were apprehended on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, around 7:00 p.m. at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier during a routine stop on the Accra–Tamale–Savelugu route.

Police say the Kia Grand Bird bus (registration AK 1309–21) raised suspicion during a routine inspection. Following a detailed search, officers discovered 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition concealed inside a fertiliser sack among passengers’ luggage.

During preliminary questioning, the driver reportedly told police that the parcel had been handed to him at the bus terminal by an unknown individual and was intended for a recipient known only as “Oboye” in Tamale.

The bus has been impounded and the ammunition seized as evidence while the two men remain in custody, assisting with investigations.
Authorities have pledged to trace the source and final destination of the consignment and promised the public updates as the case progresses.
