The Department of Social Welfare in Ayensuano District in the Eastern region is making a significant move to combat child neglect and its detrimental effects on the future of the children and society.
The Department has initiated the move on parents who have failed in their responsibilities towards their children.
About eighteen (18) victims in Anum Apapam have been apprehended to assist investigation for the arrest of their parents.
The children were released later after their parents were identified and arrested.
This proactive approach comes in response to a growing concern about the increasing number of children found wandering the streets in the district, a situation that has raised alarm bells regarding the high rate of school dropouts in the district.
The action taken by the Department of Social Welfare is under Section 8 of the Children’s Act 1998 (560), which enshrines the right to education and the well-being of children.
The section explicitly states that “no person shall deprive a child access to education, immunization, adequate diet, clothing, shelter, medical attention, or any other thing required for his/her development.”
Adartey Francis, the Director of the Ayensuano District Department of Social Welfare, has emphasized that parents found guilty of neglecting their children will be handed over to the police for prosecution.
This move aims to send a clear message that child neglect will not be tolerated.
On Tuesday October 10, 2023, the District Director of the Department of Social Welfare paid a courtesy visit to traditional rulers at Kofi Pare, a suburb community within the district, to inform them about the department’s actions, which will soon extend to the community.
In response, Barfuor Opare, the Chief of Kofi Pare, pledged his unwavering support for the Department of Social Welfare’s efforts.
He expressed his deep concern over irresponsible parenting, particularly regarding those who deny their children access to education, which he said, has contributed to rising indiscipline and deviant behaviors in the country.
This crackdown on child neglect reflects a commitment to uphold the rights and well-being of children in the Ayensuano district, sending a clear message that every child deserves a nurturing and supportive environment for their development.
