The Ghana Police Service has issued a strong denial of circulating social media claims that the 16-year-old suspect driver, Elrad Salifu Amoako is not currently at the Osu Correctional Centre, as directed by the court.
In a statement released on November 5 2024, the Police clarified that Amoako was indeed taken to the Osu Correctional Centre on November 1st, 2024, following the court’s order, and remains there as of the morning of the statement’s release.
“We, therefore, wish to state that this claim is false and constitutes the offence of Publication of false news, contrary to section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29),” the statement read.
The Police are actively investigating two social media accounts suspected of spreading the false information: a TikTok user with the handle “prisywanlov1” and a Facebook user with the handle “EmpressPapa A-Amigos.”
The Police have condemned the spread of misinformation in the wake of the tragic incident that resulted in the loss of two lives, stating that it is “deeply unfortunate” that such a tragedy is being exploited for personal gain.
“We find it deeply unfortunate that a tragic incident resulting in the loss of two beautiful souls is being exploited by some individuals in an unGhanaian manner to draw attention to themselves,” the statement said. “We urge the public to refrain from such actions and allow the families to grieve in peace.”
The Police have reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in this case. They have urged the public to be responsible consumers of information and to verify news from credible sources before sharing it.
