EC’s decision to reject nine parliamentary results wrong – Eric Alifo

Eric Alifo, a member of National Democratic Congress (NDC) has hit out at the Electoral Commission over its decision to reject nine parliamentary election results fiercely contested by the two major political parties following the December 7 polls.

In a press conference on Thursday, the Electoral Commission declared to the nation that it was rejecting nine parliamentary results, citing breaches and illegalities in the collation process.

The constituencies affected include Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central and Ahafo Ano South West.

The others are Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Techiman South and Nsawam Adoagyiri.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Alifo, who is a lawyer by profession, said the commission had erred in its decision. He questioned why the EC officials involved in the declarations had not been penalised.

“That is wrong, that is wrong. If those results were declared, the Electoral Commission has not come out to punish any of their returning officers who developed those results,” he said on Starr FM during the Weekly Review Segment.

He urged aggrieved individuals and parties to allow the process to play out and proceed to court if they were still unsatisfied with the outcome.

Mr. Alifo also insisted that he was all for a rerun rather than recollation as he did not trust the Electoral Commission’s credibility in upholding a fair process.

“For those that have not been declared, I have called for a rerun because I don’t trust the EC, I don’t the pink sheets that are in the system, the pink sheet that the NPP is holding,” he noted.

He cited an instance in Ablekuma North constituency where the commission’s election figures were inconsistent with what the agents of the two major political parties had.

He said there was “nothing wrong” with the NDC’s misgivings about the commission’s integrity, challenging it to “do the right thing” in order to build confidence among the people.
