John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to hold military personnel accountable for any disruptions caused during the 2024 elections if he is elected.
His comments come after reports of clashes between military personnel, voters, and polling agents in several constituencies.
One such incident occurred in Obuasi East, where the NDC’s Communications Officer was allegedly involved in a confrontation with two military officers, leading to chaos in the constituency.
Meanwhile, ahead of the elections, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had stated they would deploy personnel only upon request from the Ghana Police Service to provide security assistance.
However, in several constituencies, military presence was significantly higher than expected, raising concerns and contrasting with the GAF’s official statement.
In a post on social media [X], Mahama condemned the actions of the military personnel involved, describing the incident as unscrupulous on the side of the military
He stated, “My attention has been drawn to the violent activities of some unscrupulous military personnel, deployed to cause mayhem and disrupt the declaration of parliamentary results in some constituencies.
“This is to caution the personnel involved that they will be held individually liable and responsible for their actions.”
