Emmanuel Adjei nears the end of 10,000km solo ride from Germany to Accra

Emmanuel Adjei is on the final leg of a gruelling 10,000km solo cycling journey from Germany to Ghana and is expected to arrive in Accra on Friday, 19 September.

The 90-day challenge, dubbed Bike2MyRoots, has taken him across 12 countries, with his current stop in Sierra Leone. So far, he has covered more than 8,000km in an effort to raise €100,000 for EduSpots, a Ghanaian charity supporting community-led education in 11 regions of the country.

Adjei, who was born in Accra and now works as a sports scientist in Munich, has battled through diverse terrain including the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, the desert roads of Mauritania, and the coastlines of Senegal and The Gambia.

He has documented his journey via Instagram, offering followers glimpses of desert treks, camping experiences, and daily endurance tests. His adventure has attracted media attention and sparked curiosity among communities he has met along the way.

Speaking about the mission, he said:

“This cycling project is not solely about seeking the thrills of an adventure. Inspired by the saying ‘become the change you wish to see in the world,’ I am driven to use cycling to mobilise funds, support, and raise awareness to ignite and sustain community-led change through education and empowerment in deprived Ghanaian communities.”

So far, Bike2MyRoots has raised over €14,000, with funds supporting EduSpots’ network of “Spots” – community learning hubs. EduSpots works with more than 400 volunteer “Catalysts” who run education clubs in early years literacy, STEM, digital skills, gender equity and environmental awareness.

Adu Boahen Carlos, Chair of EduSpots’ Catalyst Committee, praised the initiative:

“We wish Emmanuel all the best with the final part of this incredible journey to Accra. All of EduSpots’ Catalysts are behind you. Let’s turn your passion into education for everyone.”

Homecoming

Adjei is expected to arrive at Accra’s Independence Square on 19 September, where he will be welcomed by supporters, family, and EduSpots representatives. The celebrations will continue with a durbar in his hometown of Teshie on Saturday, 20 September.

The cyclist’s feat will mark the first time a Ghanaian has undertaken such an intercontinental journey by bicycle.

Supporters are being encouraged to join in by creating “spin-off” fundraising rides under the campaign Cycle in Tandem or by making donations through the Bike2MyRoots Raisely page.

More details on EduSpots’ work are available at www.eduspots.org.
