French and Ghanaian Armies complete joint CBRN training course

French and Ghanaian forces strengthen CBRN defence through joint training

The French Embassy in Ghana and the Ghana Army have successfully concluded a two-week Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) capability training course at Michael Camp in Tema.

The programme, a collaborative initiative supported by the governments of Ghana and France, focused on mutual knowledge sharing in CBRN defence.

Twenty personnel from the Ghana Army, drawn from diverse units and specialisations, took part in the intensive course held at the Ghana Army School of Ammunition and Explosives (GASAE).

French Armed Forces experts led the knowledge transfer and practical instruction.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Frank Tetteh-Kuma, Acting Commander of GASAE, said the intermediate course had been approved by the military high command to strengthen the Ghana Army’s capacity in detecting, identifying and responding to CBRN threats.

“The course is designed to expose participants to the dynamics of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats and the appropriate responses needed to protect and defend the country,” he stated.

He added that it aims to build resilience and enhance expertise in threat detection and incident response within Ghana.

Participants came from barracks across the country, including units in the Volta, Eastern, Ashanti and Northern regions, among others.

Defence Attaché at the French Embassy in Ghana, Colonel Gregoire Madelin, noted that the Ghana Army plays a vital role in safeguarding citizens against a range of security challenges, including threats linked to illegal mining, maritime insecurity, piracy and illegal fishing.

This, he said, underpinned France’s decision to support the exchange of expertise.

The training featured intensive simulation exercises that allowed participants to practise detection, identification and response procedures for potential CBRN incidents.
