The IT system of the Electoral Commission has broken down for the past two weeks, StarrFMonline.com has learnt.
As a result of the prolonged system failure, the commission is unable to print new Voters Identification Cards as they are mandated to do by law.
The development is causing massive discomfort among the public as individuals, who for various reasons may need a reprint or new ID cards from the commission, are turned away without any hope of when the system will be back on stream.
An official of the commission, who does not want to be identified, told StarrFMonline.com the IT staff of the commission appear incapable of resolving the issue, and the commission is not ready to bring in external resource persons to help.
“The system has been down for many weeks now and we don’t know when it will be back. Our IT people have been working around but they just can’t fix the problem.
“We have no choice than be turning away people who come here in search of ID cards. The sad thing is that we have no idea when it will be restored and our regional offices keep complaining. The development is really worrying,” he bemoaned.
Deputy Communications manager of the Commission Yusif Ayuba who spoke to StarrFMonline.com said he is unable to tell when the system will begin to work again.
The development comes on the back of reports of an illegal production of voters ID cards by some individuals at Lapaz in Accra.
The fake cards were secretly produced in the inner chamber of the Palnamat Grafiks Company.
The suspects arrested in connection with the crime are being investigated by the criminal investigations department of the police service.
