Member of Parliament for Bongo, Charles Bawaduah, has said that illegal mining also known as galamsey has helped many young people.
The illegal mining menace is a major environmental and health problem in Ghana. It has destroyed forests, polluted water, and jeopardized livelihoods.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Serwaah Amihere, Mr. Bawaduah galamsey has provided jobs for the youth. “Yes, Galamsey has helped young people. The problem is how it destroys the land and water bodies,” he said.
Hon. Bawaduah believes that instead of stopping small-scale mining completely, the government should find ways to make it safe and legal.
The lawmaker also suggested that young people interested in mining should be trained and certified so they can work without harming the environment.
Mr. Bawaduah, however, stated that the new Minister for Environment must fulfill the promise the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made to Ghanaians on the illegal mining issues “We must protect our land and water while also making sure young people have jobs,” he added.
