The Ghana Education Service (GES) has been tasked to investigate the circumstances surrounding why some eight (8) students of the Nangbagu Yapala M/A JHS in the Northern Region were allegedly barred from sitting for the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The eight (8) candidates were reportedly disallowed from entering the examination hall by supervisors due to lateness.
However, reports indicates the affected candidates were involved in a fatal accident while on their way to write the English Language paper on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at the Tamale Senior High School (Tabasco) when a tricycle transporting them crashed into a motorcycle carrying a man his wife.
Addressing Journalists on Monday, June 15, 2025 after a monitoring exercise of the ongoing B.E.C.E at the La Salem School in Accra, Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu described the situation as “double tragedy” for the students who have suffered varying degrees of injury.
“There is a student who was involved in an accident and when he arrived late was prevented from undertaking the exams so it’ll be a double tragedy for him. He suffered emotional trouble and trauma and also associated barring from the examination,” Mr. Iddrisu said.
In response to heightened concerns about the development, the Tamale South legislator also disclosed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) have launched an investigation into the matter.
According to him, the authorities will review the findings and ensure that the affected candidates are given a fair opportunity to resit the missed paper.
“The Director General of GES and his men are investigating it and appropriate remedial action will be taken to allow him progress where necessary within the rules with the assessment authorities of the country,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
