The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran in response to the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the Mahama administration has authorised the emergency evacuation of all Ghanaians residing in Iran. The government has also ordered the closure of Ghana’s embassy in Tehran with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.
“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict. To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect. The evacuation through land borders covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other compatriots,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
The evacuation plan includes diplomats, students, professionals, and other Ghanaian nationals, who will be relocated via land borders due to current security concerns.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, has significantly scaled down operations. Ghanaian nationals in Israel have been advised to remain in close contact with consular authorities as the situation unfolds.

The Foreign Affairs Minister assured that the government is closely monitoring developments in Israel and will issue further guidance as necessary.
This decision follows a dramatic escalation in the Middle East conflict, sparked by a surprise Israeli assault on Friday that reportedly targeted Iran’s top military command and critical nuclear infrastructure. Iran has since launched retaliatory missile strikes on Israeli cities including Tel Aviv and Haifa, further fuelling fears of a broader regional war.

Amid the crisis, global leaders attending the G7 Summit have expressed deep concern over the potential fallout, warning that the confrontation between Israel and Iran could spiral into a full-scale Middle East war.
While the United States has officially denied direct involvement in Israel’s offensive, reports suggest that U.S. forces assisted in intercepting incoming Iranian missiles aimed at Israel.
Ghana has renewed its call for both nations to pursue diplomacy and de-escalate the tensions.
