Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central and a member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has revealed that approximately 50 Ghanaian nationals currently residing in Iran have declined the government’s offer of evacuation, despite the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.
Addressing the media, Mr Boamah confirmed that although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had activated plans for the immediate evacuation of all Ghanaian citizens in Iran, many have expressed reluctance to leave the country.
He urged the government to strengthen its diplomatic engagements and safety protocols to ensure the secure return of all Ghanaians who may be at risk.
Mr Boamah also appealed to the international community to step in and exert pressure on both nations to de-escalate the growing hostilities.
His comments come in the wake of the Mahama administration’s announcement—through Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa—that Ghana would evacuate its nationals from Iran and temporarily shut down the embassy in Tehran due to rising safety concerns.
