The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has strongly condemned the violence that marred the Ghana Premier League match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC on February 2, 2025, at Nana Kronamansah Park. The chaos led to the tragic loss of life, multiple injuries, and property destruction, prompting swift action from the football governing body.
In a statement, the GFA described the events as “an unacceptable blemish on the integrity of our game” and extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, while wishing a swift recovery to those injured.
As an immediate measure, the GFA’s Executive Committee has invoked Article 14(2) of the Premier League Regulations, indefinitely banning the use of Nsoatreman FC’s home venue until further notice.
“This action ensures the safety of all stakeholders while investigations proceed,” the GFA stated.
Additionally, the GFA has tasked its Security Committee, led by DCOP Lydia Donkor, and the FA Prosecutors to visit the site, gather match reports, and compile all necessary evidence for submission to the FA’s Disciplinary Committee.
Beyond internal actions, the GFA has engaged the Ghana Police Service to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the violent incidents.
“We expect law enforcement agencies to deploy all necessary tools to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are identified, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement read.
The GFA reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on hooliganism, warning that severe sanctions would be imposed on any club, official, or supporter found guilty of violence, intimidation, or incitement.
This development follows an official statement from Kumasi Asante Kotoko, detailing multiple security lapses during the match. The club reported missile attacks on their bench, a physical assault on goalkeeper Mohammed Camara, and injuries sustained by their Head of Media.
Tragically, one Kotoko supporter was stabbed and later succumbed to his injuries at Sunyani Hospital.
The GFA has assured the public that further updates, including decisions from its Disciplinary Committee and findings from the police investigation, will be communicated in due course.
