Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly refuted reports suggesting that the United States plans to deport Salvadoran national Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana.
In a firm statement, Mr. Ablakwa said Ghana has “not accepted and will not accept” Abrego Garcia, describing the reports as “misleading and completely false.”
“Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia. He cannot be deported to Ghana. This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to U.S. authorities,” the Minister stated.
He explained that while Ghana had earlier agreed — on humanitarian grounds — to receive a limited number of non-criminal West Africans as part of a regional solidarity understanding, that arrangement does not apply to individuals like Abrego Garcia.
“In my interactions with U.S. officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed that Ghana “strongly objects” to the reports and reaffirmed that no agreement exists for Abrego Garcia’s deportation to Ghana.
His comments come after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reportedly indicated plans to deport Abrego Garcia — who was previously wrongfully sent to El Salvador — to Ghana following failed attempts to remove him to Eswatini and Uganda.
