GHone TV’s Health reporter and News presenter, Nadima Umar Uthman, has won this year’s bronze medal at the 27th annual United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) awards, receiving the prestigious Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize for her outstanding coverage of the United Nations (UN) and UN agencies.
This recognition places Nadima as the second Ghanaian to receive the Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize, succeeding Samuel Agyemang, formerly of Metro TV. The award, named after the late Ricardo Ortega—a prominent Spanish journalist tragically killed while covering Haiti in 2004—acknowledges journalists who excel in UN-related reporting.
Other awards went to Colum Lynch, senior reporter for Devex (United States), Marco Congiu of Sky TG24 (Italy), Alannah Travers of The New Humanitarian (United Kingdom), NHK Special – The UN Production Team (Japan), Shalini Singh, People’s Archive of Rural India (India), Valerie Volcovici from Reuters (United States) and Juan Carlos Machorro, Periodismo y Ambiente (Mexico), Roy Barbosa of Manila Today (Philippines).
Celebrated American actress, Sharon Stone was also honored as the Global Citizen of the Year 2023. UNICEF USA Ambassador Sofia Carson received the 2023 Global Advocate of the Year Award, while Chairman of Edizione S.P.A. Alessandro Benetton was awarded the 2023 Global Advocate of the Year prize.
Nadima Umar Uthman, a 2023 Global Covering Disease Fellow by the National Press Foundation in the US, brings over five years of dedicated experience as a broadcast journalist in Ghana. Her focus on health reporting, particularly in maternal and child health, has solidified her position as a reliable and respected voice in the industry.
Throughout her career, Nadima has demonstrated a unique ability to transform intricate health topics into compelling narratives. Her coverage spans critical issues such as childhood cancers, sickle cell disease, rare diseases, lead poisoning in children, dementia, and maternal mortality. Beyond reporting, Nadima is committed to advancing health equity and leveraging emerging technologies to address healthcare challenges in Africa.
The UNCA awards recognize journalists from around the world for the best print, broadcast (TV & Radio), and online, web-based media coverage of the United Nations, UN agencies, and field operations.
The awards ceremony took place on December 15, 2023, during the annual UNCA gala at Casa Cipriani, 10 South Street in New York, attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The event was also graced by UN ambassadors, high-level UN officials, Hollywood celebrities, humanitarians, corporate and cultural organizations, and media from around the globe.
Established in 1948, UNCA is a professional organization comprising over 200 correspondents and producers from diverse countries, representing various publications, news agencies, and broadcasters worldwide. The organization’s enduring relationship with the Secretary-General underscores its pivotal role in advocating for news coverage and access to news sources at the United Nations.
