The Christian Council has condemned the gun-wielding incident involving the Awutu Senya East legislator Hawa Koomson.
According to the religious body, it is important such conducts are not tolerated among society.
“The admission of the State Minister, herself, even though contrary to several eyewitness accounts, there were some other armed persons present with her who fired the shots. Such high-profile incidents should not be countenanced by our State Security. Acts or threats of coercion, intimidation or physical harm perpetrated to affect the electoral process, all in the context of electoral competition, should have no place in these worrying times with COVID-19 hanging over us.
“Violence by powerful incumbents like the Minister should be totally condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians. Addressing the current situation involving Hawa Koomson will assure confidence and trust in our society and the security ahead of the 2020 elections. Pre-election violence itself can damage the credibility of elections as much as flawed elections may spark violence, ” the Council said in a statement signed by Chairman Rt. Rev. Prof. J.O.Y. Mante.
The MP who has confessed firing a warning shot at the centre claimed it was to defend herself after feeling threatened while touring registration centres at Kasoa.
Civil Society groups, as well as security analysts, have called for her arrest, prosecution and resignation.
Security expert Professor Kwesi Aning says the action by the Minister undermines President Akufo-Addo’s fight against vigilantism in the country.
According to him, the MP is unfit to hold herself out as a lawmaker and also as a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
Addressing the Media on Wednesday, Director for Elections for the opposition NDC Elvis Afriyie Ankrah said if President Akufo-Addo fails to prosecute the Minister, the next NDC government under John Mahama will ensure that the minister faces the law.
