Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) leader Percival Kofi Akpaloo has claimed that his recent arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was politically motivated.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, September 12, Akpaloo suggested that the arrest was triggered by his comments following the August 6 helicopter crash, in which he criticized the government’s negligence on road safety.
According to Akpaloo, the charges lack legal merit and are being used to intimidate him politically.
He said, “Exactly…because when the helicopter crash happened, I passed a comment about the fact that they’ve neglected our roads and people are dying on the roads, so they are not paying attention.”

He added, “So that triggered all these, it’s not like I’ve done anything wrong. It was like let’s find something to arrest him so that everybody will know that this guy has been arrested, that’s all.”
Akpaloo further explained, “So they used EOCO to do that, I’ve not done anything. I don’t believe whether they will even be able to go to court to file any case because there’s nothing to stand on.”
He concluded, “Appiah Stadium called me and said after they finish with the burial, they’ll come for me, so I had made my bag ready.” This reflects the anticipation and pressure he faced, preparing for what he considered an inevitable, politically motivated arrest.
Akpaloo, who was taken into EOCO custody at his Kumasi residence on September 3, 2025, was granted police bail with strict conditions, including a GH¢10 million bond and two sureties.
He remained in detention for several days while meeting these requirements and was released on Thursday, September 11.
EOCO has confirmed that investigations into the alleged financial crimes remain ongoing, though Akpaloo maintains that he continues to cooperate with authorities while out on bail.
