The 5th edition of the annual Innovate Ghana Design Challenge Awards is happening this Friday, August 11, 2017 at the International House Office of the University of Ghana, Legon.
This year’s challenge focuses on solving societal problems using either science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) and it is proudly powered by Gremkay International and supported by National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), University of Ghana, Junior Camp Ghana, WeGo Innovate and Primus Photography.
Innovate Ghana is a design competition that allows Ghanaian youth to apply their existing knowledge to solve development problems of today. The goal is to inspire innovation among students through competition and develop products and solutions for national development.
The high school challenge, is one of two annual challenges each year. After a three-month application window, finalists are selected to participate in a 10-day intensive workshop where they participate in design review sessions, embark on community trips and are exposed to careers in STEM. The participants are guided by peer mentors from various universities (Stanford, University of Ghana, KNUST, Ashesi, etc) with adept knowledge and skills to help participants further improve the ideas.
The winning team will receive seed funding for the implementation of its idea. Special guests for Friday’s event include Amma Aboagye (Afropole & USAID), Ato Ulzen-Appiah (Ghana Think Foundation), Elizabeth Bintliff (Junior Achievement Africa), Emily Sheldon (Impact Hub Accra) and Gordon Adomdza (Ashesi University), amongst other special guests from GhScientific, GhIE, Global Lab and others.
