Former President John Dramani Mahama addressed recent remarks by President Nana Akufo-Addo during an engagement session in Old Ningo, within the Ningo Prampram constituency. The session was marked by Mahama’s firm response to Akufo-Addo’s call for him to clearly state his stance on illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”
In his remarks, Mahama expressed surprise at Akufo-Addo’s claim, noting that he had repeatedly commented on galamsey in various forums. “President Akufo-Addo said I should come out clearly on galamsey. It looks like he doesn’t live in this country,” Mahama stated. He referenced a comprehensive policy discussion he had participated in at the Investor of Energy and Natural Resources event, where he outlined his party’s approach to small-scale mining for an hour, followed by two hours of questions and answers.
Mahama further criticized the current administration for what he described as inaction on the galamsey issue. “The people of Ghana elected him. He’s currently the president of Ghana. It is his responsibility to deal with galamsey now,” he said, urging the President to take ownership of the challenge.
Looking ahead, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to tackling the illegal mining crisis if re-elected in the 2024 general elections. “I know that after 7th January 2025, when Ghanaians have voted for me, I will take that responsibility and we will sort out illegal mining,” he concluded.
The issue of galamsey has been a major concern in Ghana, with its environmental and social impacts drawing criticism from various quarters. Mahama’s response adds to the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of the government’s measures to address the crisis.
