The Judicial Service Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has condemned in no uncertain terms the attack on the Kwame Danso District Court in the Sene-West District of the Bono-East Region, where youth in the area freed accused persons.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, led to two accused persons being unlawfully released, leaving court staff, the magistrate, and some court users traumatized.

In a statement released on Thursday, December 11, 2025, signed by the National President of JUSAG, Samuel Afotey Otu, JUSAG advised staff of the District Court Kwame Danso to stay away from work until their safety can be guaranteed.

JUSAG has appealed to the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to close down the court until adequate measures are put in place to ensure the safety of staff and court users.

Mr. Otu also called on the Inspector General of Police to take immediate action to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.

“JUSAG condemns in no uncertain terms the attack on the District Court, Kwame Danso in the Sene-West District of the Bono-East Region,” the Statement read in parts.

“We also wish to make a passionate appeal to the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to close down the court until adequate measures are put in place to ensure the safety of staff and court users.

“In the meantime, staff of the District Court Kwame Danso are admonished to stay away from work until they are fully assured of their safety.

“We further demand that the Inspector General of Police and his team take immediate steps to apprehend the perpetrators of these violent crimes against the administration of justice and bring them to face the full rigour of the law.

“We wish to send our well wishes to the distressed staff, court users, and the security services in the area for the unfortunate misconduct of the very people they have been serving.”

ATTACK ON DISTRICT COURT KWAME DANSO

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has learnt with deep concern a mob attack on the District Court, Kwame Danso in the Bono-East Region on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 whilst Court was in session.

The attack was in connection with the case of The Republic vrs. Isaac Kwabena Mintah &
2 Others in which the accused persons were charged with offence of causing unlawful damage, stealing, and assault contrary to the provisions of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

On Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at around 8:00am, a group of angry mob massed up in their numbers at the Kwame Danso Police Station with chants of violence.

Upon having information that the accused persons in the case were remanded, they proceeded to the District Court, Kwame Danso. Whilst the Court was still in session, the group forcefully made their way into the courtroom with harmful objects.

They disrupted court proceedings, disbursed staff and other litigants and freed the accused persons.

Their violent conducts prompted staff of the Court to take cover by running into their offices and locked themselves up. The angry mob destroyed furniture and other properties in the courtroom and other offices. They also made attempts to break into magistrate’s chambers to attack her and other officers.

The situation almost got out of control. It took the reinforcement from Atebubu Police Unit to salvage what was left of the destruction.

The magistrate and the staff had a traumatic experience that day.

They are still traumatized and live in atmosphere of grave fear for their lives and personal safety. Their situation is not conducive for delivery of Justice. We have noted previous attacks on police station a number of times.

The trend of violent attacks on courts are disturbing and they undermine the administration of justice. The situation, if not checked, could ruin Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of hope for democracy and rule of law in Africa.

JUSAG condemns in no uncertain terms, the attack on the District Court, Kwame Danso in the Sene-West District of the Bono-East Region.

We also wish to make a passionate appeal to the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to close down the court until adequate measures are put in place to ensure safety of staff and court users.

In the meantime, staff of the District Court Kwame Dans are admonished to stay away from work until they are fully assured of their safety.

We further demand that the Inspector General of Police and his team take immediate steps to apprehend the perpetrators of these violent crimes against the administration of Justice and bring them to face the full rigor of the law.

We wish to send our well wishes to the distressed staff, court users and the security services in the area for the unfortunate misconducts of the very people they have been serving.
