Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has assured the people of Komenda that the government is committed to reviving the long-abandoned Komenda Sugar Factory to spur economic growth and improve livelihoods in the region.

During a visit to the Komenda Traditional Area, the Vice President also pledged that the government would take urgent steps to rehabilitate the community’s deteriorating road network, which residents say is contributing to serious health issues due to dust and poor infrastructure.

The Paramount Chief of the Komenda Traditional Area, Okatakyi Komey VIII, used the occasion to appeal to the Vice President to prioritize the operationalization of the sugar factory as a critical component of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative. He emphasized that the factory holds immense potential to create jobs and stimulate local economic development not just for Komenda, but for surrounding communities as well.

Okatakyi Komey VIII expressed concern over the factory’s eight-year dormancy, describing it as a significant setback to the area’s development efforts. He also highlighted the urgent need to fix the roads, which he noted have been a persistent source of respiratory health challenges among residents.

Responding to the concerns, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged that the prolonged non-operation of the sugar factory is unacceptable and assured the chiefs and people of Komenda of the government’s resolve to make the factory functional once again.

The Vice President also assured fishing community of government commitment to resolving their challenges.

Her visit formed part of a thank-you tour to express gratitude to the people of Komenda for their steadfast support during the 2024 general elections.

The event attracted several prominent figures, including Political Advisor to the Vice President Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie and her Deputy Hon. Jajah; Member of Parliament for the area Samuel Atta Mills; Central Regional Minister; Municipal Chief Executive; security agency heads; religious and traditional leaders; as well as executives and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
