President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government is currently implementing its flagship Irrigation for Wealth Programme (IWP) in the Oti Region, with 7,200 hectares of irrigated land under development in two districts.
Speaking during his tour of the region on Friday, July 25, President Mahama stated that the initiative is a critical part of his administration’s agricultural transformation agenda aimed at boosting food security, creating jobs, and empowering rural communities.
“Our Irrigation for Wealth Programme (IWP), a key pillar of our agricultural transformation agenda, is already being implemented in the Oti Region,” he said.
According to the President, the selected sites are in the Biakoye District and Krachi East Municipality, where the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is actively conducting feasibility studies and preparing for full implementation.
He urged young people in the region to embrace agriculture as a viable and rewarding career path.
“I encourage the youth of Oti to position themselves to take advantage of this initiative. Agriculture is not a job of last resort, it is a business of first choice, and we are making it viable, productive, and rewarding,” President Mahama said.

The IWP is expected to enhance year-round farming, improve livelihoods, and contribute to Ghana’s goal of becoming self-sufficient in food production while providing economic opportunities for thousands of farmers.
