Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu, has called on members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to avoid anger and division as the party prepares for its upcoming presidential primaries.
Addressing the situation at the official launch of the NPP’s Patriotic Institute on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the party’s headquarters, Afenyo-Markin urged party members and presidential hopefuls to remain calm and united.
“Let us put an end to the anger and division of the past and let us move forward as one people,” he appealed. “The elephant is a waiting symbol. And we shall wait to save Ghana again. Long live the new patriotic party. Long live the ideals of development and freedom. And long live the democratic spirit of Ghana.”
The Effutu MP emphasised that the party’s unity is critical not only for a peaceful internal election but also to position the NPP as a strong contender in the 2028 national polls.
The NPP has officially scheduled its presidential primary for Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The date was announced by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, and later endorsed by the party’s National Council.
Since the announcement, several aspirants have declared their interest in the race, sparking tensions, accusations, and sharp exchanges among supporters.
