The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has announced that the stalled New Eastern Regional Hospital project will soon resume following directives from President John Dramani Mahama for contractors to return to site.
Former President Akuffo Addo cut sod for the construction of the 600 -bed new Eastern Regional Hospital in 2020.
President Akufo-Addo said the funding for the project had been fully secured from the Standard Charted Bank of the United Kingdom, with a guarantee from the United Kingdom Export Finance to the tune of 7,920,000 Euros.
First phase of this new hospital project which involves the construction of a two hundred and eighty-five (285) bed facility, was expected to be completed by the end of December 2023.
However, the contractors abondened site in 2022 for nonpayment stalling the project till date.
But the Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey on Thursday, June 11, 2026, during the launch of the centenary celebration of the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua revealed that President John Mahama has directed contractors to resume work on the facility, a move she described as a major step toward improving access to quality healthcare services for residents of the Eastern Region and beyond.
“The long-awaited new Eastern Regional Hospital project will soon receive renewed attention. His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has given directives for the contractors to return to site and resume work,” she stated.

She noted that the intervention demonstrates government’s determination to enhance healthcare delivery through improved infrastructure and modern medical facilities.
While officially launching Eastern Regional hospital’s 100th anniversary celebration under the theme, “A Century of Quality Healthcare, Innovation and Excellence.”
She commended management and staff of the hospital for their dedication and professionalism over the past century, describing the facility as a beacon of hope that has served generations of Ghanaians.
The Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey further urged stakeholders to use the centenary celebration as an opportunity to renew efforts toward building a stronger healthcare system through investment in infrastructure, technology, research and workforce development.
The Eastern Regional Hospital,originally established to serve New Juaben Municipalities was converted into Regional Hospital a role it has played for the past 100 years, and remains one of the major referral health facilities in the region despite limited facilities.
The Eastern Region Hospital is widely celebrated as a top-tier healthcare facility.
Over the years, the hospital and its staff have been recognized for clinical excellence, outstanding service delivery, and public health achievements
The hospital continue to receive referral cases from accross the Eastern region,parts of Greater Accra, Volta and Ashanti Regions.
The hospital recorded 298,272 OPD attendance in 2024 with average bed Occupancy of 93.3,%.
The completion of the new hospital project is expected to significantly expand access and improve service delivery with state -of the -arts medical technologies and equipment.
