President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to transform selected nursing and midwifery training colleges into degree-awarding institutions, as part of a broader agenda to modernize Ghana’s tertiary education and healthcare systems.

The announcement was made during his “Thank You” tour of the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31, where he reiterated his commitment to improving access to quality education, particularly in underserved areas of the country.

Emphasizing the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) vision, President Mahama also revealed plans to establish a new university in the Ahafo Region, with a focus on agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences.

The proposed institution is expected to contribute significantly to regional development by equipping students with the skills needed to transform key sectors of the economy.

“We remain committed to expanding tertiary education, especially in underserved regions,” President Mahama stated. “In line with this, the NDC government will establish a university in the Ahafo Region to offer world-class programmes in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences.”

He added, “We will upgrade selected nursing and midwifery colleges across the region into degree-awarding institutions. And we will continue the distribution of buses to SHSs and health training institutions to support academic operations.”
