The Western Central Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers – two military officers and two civilians – for attempting to rob LongShine Mining Company Limited at Obouhu, a suburb of Prestea.

According to eyewitnesses, the gang comprised six men, including two military officers and four civilians. However, two of the civilians managed to escape, leaving the two officers and two other accomplices in police custody.

The attempted robbery occurred on Sunday, September 28, 2025, between 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., prompting a distress call from the mining company’s security guards and management to the Prestea Police Command.

The four arrested suspects have since been transferred from the Prestea Police Command to the Tarkwa Divisional Police Command for further investigations. A Toyota pickup with registration number GN 6116-25, allegedly used by the suspects, has also been impounded.

A journalist with Prestea FM, Nhyiraba Kwadwo Owusu Aduomi, reported that some security personnel recounted their ordeal. One of them narrated:

“Around 10-11 p.m., I was asleep when I heard a strange noise. Suddenly, a soldier was standing over me, asking me to get up. He had already handcuffed my friend and insisted I should dress up. Another of my friends came from the back, and they arrested and handcuffed him too. They took us into their car, scattered things in the room, and took our money and phones. On the way, they arrested another person and asked him where the gold room was.”

Mr. Gideon Ofori, a Tailing Officer at LongShine Mining Company, also recounted the incident to Empire News. He said he became suspicious when he saw a vehicle rushing to the site.

“It wasn’t a car used here, and the men were in military uniforms, armed with guns and some wearing masks. They went straight to my boss’s office. When we confronted them, one soldier claimed they were from Accra and working with National Security. He asked if we had permits for our work. Later, one of them pulled out a phone and pistol and demanded we settle them. We refused unless they returned the items they had taken. Their accomplices refused to bring the stolen items, so we prevented them from leaving and called the police. That was when it became clear they were criminals.”
