The Minority in Parliament has charged the government to do everything possible to avoid payment of about $50 million judgment debt to Beijing Everyway Company for wrongful termination of their contract.
The Government in 2020 terminated the $100 million Accra Intelligence Traffic Management Project with the company and awarded it to Huawei.
Management of the Beijing Everyway is in arbitration with the government in London demanding $50 million payment in damages.
Addressing the media Minority spokesperson on Roads and Transport, Governs Kwame Agbodza charged the government to immediately settle with the company to avoid such payment.
The Adaklu MP, however, warned officials involved that any future NDC government will make them answer for the decision to abrogate the valid contract without basis.
“I am just taking the opportunity to caution the government to tread cautiously with whatever you have done with this particular contract. Because my information is that you are heading towards a payment of a judgment of almost 50million dollars.
“That 50million dollars will not include the actual cost which is still another 100million dollars and then a further 25 million dollars tax waiver that we have granted Huawei. So the government needs to be cautious because Ghanaians will not be happy knowing the circumstances in which we are currently financially and to be throwing this kind of money away,” Mr. Agbodza bemoaned.
He continued: “I think that could be at the peak of recklessness on the part of the Akuffo-Addo government and I think they must sit up and deal with it. Anybody found to be part of this recklessness in the future can’t blame Parliament because it was almost a deliberate decision they have taken to cause this level of financial loss to the State, which is unacceptable.”
