Christmas turned brighter with joy for 600 mothers who gave birth during the festive period as staff and managers of Telecommunications Giant, MTN Ghana Ltd, paid surprise visits to hospitals to share baby hampers.

Beneficiary mothers in the 30 selected hospitals across Ghana’s sixteen regions received huge hampers containing essential baby products, toys, detergents, diapers and several other personal care products.

In the Ashanti Region, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Departments, the Maternity Wards and the Mother and Baby Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) recorded 22 deliveries on 25th and 26th December with no preterm nor stillbirths.

“Christmas is a period of showing love. We also take that opportunity to show love to the people around us especially to mothers who have just delivered,” MTN Northern Business Corporate Affairs Manager Mrs. Cynthia Darko shared.

“We use these baby hampers to welcome the babies born on 25th and 26th as a social responsibility and commitment to showing our care and love for the people around us. We consider this as one of the flagship projects of the MTN Ghana Foundation,” she added.

Elated Christmas Mothers

An elated and thankful Rosemary Ameyaa, a mother who delivered on Christmas Day could not bottle in her joy receiving a baby hamper for her new born daughter.

“When I heard MTN was visiting, I guessed they were just going to may be give us airtime. This was such a pleasant surprise. It contains everything needed to cater for a new born,” she pointed out.

Another mother Rosemary Appiah Kubi described the feeling of giving birth within the Christmas period as exciting and special commending MTN for the thoughtful gesture.

Receiving the team on behalf of management of the hospital, the Nurse Manager for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department Gifty Serwaa Adu underscored the importance of such gestures especially to parents of humble backgrounds.

“Some of the pregnant women come here with nothing to deliver. These donations will really go a long way to support them,” she commended.

Gifty Serwaa Adu admitted that though nurses sacrifice celebrating Christmas with their families to cater for patients; they find joy delivering babies on a day set aside to remember the birth of Jesus Christ.

Defaulting Mothers Appeal

Mrs. Serwaa Adu however appealed for support to pay the medical bills of at least ten mothers unable to pay bills ranging from Ghc4, 000 to GHc 40,000, to secure their discharge.

She explained that the mothers included very young mothers and several other women abandoned by their partners.

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is part of 17 hospitals benefitting some 260 baby hampers in the Northern Sector of MTN’s nationwide business coverage.

The noble gesture has become an annual affair for MTN Ghana since the year 2011 with some three thousand five hundred (3500) hampers gifted to mothers over the period.

This generous act not only supports new mothers but also reinforces MTN’s commitment to social responsibility and community welfare during the festive season.
