A member of the National Democratic Congress, Hamza Suhuyini Esq., has assured Ghanaians that the governing party remains committed to delivering on its campaign promise to pass the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Speaking in an interview with Lily Mohammed on GH Today on GHOne TV on Monday, April 13, 2026, Suhuyini emphasised that the government has not shifted its position on issues relating to cultural values and LGBTQ+ rights.
“This government has not said that we will not act when it comes to the preservation of the cultural identities and rights of our country.” He stated.
According to him, the administration has not taken steps to legalise same-sex activities. “This government is not taking steps to repeal the criminal code to make it legal for gay activities in this country… This government is not encouraging the setting up of community centers intended to propagate gay rights.”
Hamza Suhuyini stressed that these distinctions are important in understanding the government’s stance. “These are fundamental differences that you must not lose sight of.”
He however acknowledging public concerns about delays in passing the bill, stating that he “understand(s) the impatience of the ordinary Ghanaian, especially when it comes to the delay with the private member’s bill, justifiable, justifiable…. And as a government, we will not say that those concerns are not concerns we ought to honor.”
He added that “that is why the speaker himself has indicated that as speaker, he would ensure that the bill goes through the right processes and he will not stand in the way of that bill and it will be forwarded to His Excellency President Mahama to act on.”

We will stay true to the promise we made to the ordinary Ghanaian.”
“All what we are asking for is for the system to work so that Parliament will do the needful and forward same to His Excellency the President and action will be taken.” He called for due process to be followed to ensure the bill is passed and assented to.
