NDC no longer regard Rawlings – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has bemoaned the treatment given to former President J.J Rawlings by members of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) – a party he founded.

Remarking on the loud cheers given to former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings by the minority side of the House, after he had acknowledged her in his salutation, as against the silence that greeted that of Mr. Rawlings, Akufo-Addo said NDC members appear not to recognise the founder of their party anymore.

“Mr. Speaker that’s the way of the world; the founder of the party is no longer recognized by the members of the party,” he said.

The comment of the President appeared to have unsettled the minority members who maintained a sudden silence before bouncing back to the jeers that are often associated with the state of the nation address.

All three ex-presidents since the coming into being of the 1992 constitution were in Parliament to witness the second delivery of the President’s State of the Nation Address.

Mr. Rawlings has in recent times has brushes with NDC as he is often seen criticizing them publicly. He is on record to have said the party will struggle to win power from the NPP in 2020, when Ghana goes to the polls again.

Meanwhile, some analysts have said today’s state of the nation address will be dominated by the government’s efforts on the economic and security front of the country over the last one year.

Job creation and measures in reducing youth unemployment are also among key expectations of Ghanaians as the Agric minister’s claim that over 745,000 jobs have been created through the government’s Planting for Food and jobs project has been greeted with doubt.
