Former acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),
Joseph Danquah Smith Butey, has defended the election of Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo Bamba, as the party’s First Vice Chairman, describing him as a qualified candidate who fairly contested and won under the party’s constitution.
Speaking to Starr FM in the aftermath of the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, Mr Butey addressed the surprise and controversy surrounding Bamba’s victory.
Bamba topped the field of 13 candidates for the three vice-chairmanship positions with 3,116 votes, ahead of Henry Nana Boakye (3,061 votes, elected Second Vice Chairman) and Nana Akomea (approximately 2,987 votes, elected Third Vice Chairman).
“He was innocent, especially you know after the elections a lot of people were surprised about Kojo Bamba becoming the first vice chair for the party,” Mr Butey said.
“He’s a human being,” he contested, “he subjected himself. If anything that review has been there, the party constitution has prescribed once you’re qualified. There’s nothing wrong with him being the first vice.”
Mr Butey went further to criticise what he described as Ghana’s excessive value placed on English-speaking ability, contrasting it with other nations.
“Only Ghana here that we value those who speak English. When you go to India, they don’t speak English. When you go to China, they don’t speak English. When you go to Germany, they don’t speak English. When you go to Turkey, they don’t speak English. When you go to France, they don’t speak English. They speak their own language. What is wrong with that? They have chosen a very good person to work for the party,” he said.
Bamba, a former auto mechanic and one-time leader associated with the Delta Force group, rose through the NPP’s grassroots ranks.
He previously served as Deputy National Director of Operations of the party’s Youth wing.
His election at the October 3, 2026, conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium has drawn attention due to his past and the unexpected nature of the result.
