Peter Toobu, Member of Parliament for Wa West, has outlined the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) plans to transform Ghana’s security sector.
Toobu emphasized transparency in selecting personnel for peace-support operations.
“We will develop a comprehensive security and safety program to support the implementation of our 24-Hour Economic Policy,” Toobu explained during a press briefing at the Headquarters in Accra.
To achieve this, the NDC plans to recruit 25,000 additional personnel, bolstering the existing strength.
Toobu stressed “We will ensure merit-based, transparent, and decentralized recruitment and promotions in all security agencies.”
Toobu referenced the recent plan to recruit 11,000 police officers, promising to disclose details when possible. “We will ensure equal access and opportunities in the recruitment process,” he emphasized.
The NDC plans to implement community-based crime prevention programs, focusing on high-crime areas. “We will enhance police presence and patrols in neighborhoods and public spaces,” Toobu explained.
He recalled the successful “Police Visibility” initiative under former IGP Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan in 2014-2015. “Ghanaians felt safer with increased police presence,” Toobu noted.
The NDC aims to revive this initiative, ensuring citizens feel secure.
“We want Ghanaians to feel protected, not intimidated,” Toobu stressed.
