Staff of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) have embarked on industrial action at the agency’s headquarters in Accra, demanding the immediate removal of Director-General Alhaji Mohammed Abdul-Salam.
The protest disrupted operations and led to a heightened security presence at the premises as workers blocked Brennan Hall, the facility where the NLA conducts its lottery draw operations, and vowed not to reopen it until their demands are met.
The local union secretary told reporters that staff are still receiving the same salaries they earned in 2024 and face serious operational challenges, including a lack of laptops, vehicles, and other essential working equipment.
The workers accused management of prioritising other expenditures while neglecting their needs.
They claimed the Director-General, Alhaji Mohammed Abdul-Salam, allocated about GH¢2 million to a new agency for publicity purposes and alleged that board members receive multiple car allowances while staff salary concerns remain unaddressed.
“They are not going to work today and they are going to operate until the board is removed,” a union representative said, emphasising that the staff want entirely new leadership and are not interested in negotiations that retain the current board or Director-General.
The workers rejected an appeal from the Minister of Employment drowning out the message and insisting they will only open the hall after a face-to-face meeting with the minister.
The sit-down strike and demonstration began on Monday, 24 August 2026, following earlier deadlock in salary negotiations.
Management of the NLA has separately called on the local union to halt the action and return to the negotiation table, stating it remains committed to resolving the wage dispute peacefully.
