Supreme Court nominee, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, has endorsed the current constitutional arrangement that allows for an uncapped number of judges at Ghana’s apex court.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe argued that the framers of the 1992 Constitution were deliberate in leaving the number of Supreme Court justices open-ended. He maintained that the flexibility this provides is critical for promoting judicial efficiency.

“The framers of our law, the Constitution, know why they haven’t put a limit on the number of Supreme Court judges; it’s not capped,” he told the committee. “So far as the Constitution doesn’t cap the number of judges, I am for it.”
Justice Dzamefe’s position aligns with arguments previously advanced by the Chief Justice, who has advocated for expanding the bench to help reduce the backlog of cases and improve the pace of justice delivery across the country.

The call for a flexible bench size comes amid increasing demands for judicial reform and concerns about delays within Ghana’s legal system.
