NPP’s parliamentary wins in Northern Region not influenced by Bawumia – Murtala

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has expressed that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) securing of nine parliamentary seats in the Northern Region has nothing to do with the NPP Flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview on Starr Today with Tutuwaa Danso, Ibrahim Murtala explained why he asserts that the NPP’s parliamentary wins have nothing to do with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the National Democratic Congress lost some seats in the Northern Region due to internal divisions in the party after their parliamentary primaries.

He also stated that if Bawumia were instrumental in the NPP’s parliamentary wins in the region, then the NPP would have also won the presidential elections in most of the constituencies in the region.

“The reason the NPP has indeed made some strides, if you like, in the northern region, has nothing to do with NPP’s work or NPP as a viable political party. It has to do with, unfortunately, our inability over the years to mend fences after our parliamentary primaries.  If it was to be about Dr. Bawumia, he would have been winning the presidential elections too. So whether President Mahama will win presidential elections in those constituencies, or NPP may win the parliamentary seat, it tells you it has nothing to do with the persona of Dr. Bawumia. Dr. Bawumia contested with President Mahama.

“Let’s look at the total number of constituencies President Mahama won.  So in some of the constituencies he won, but the NDC lost the parliamentary elections. It has to do with our inability over the years to mend fences, to find solutions to our post-parliamentary primaries conflicts”, the lawmaker explained.

He further stated that the NDC has laid down measures and strategies to ensure that they reclaim parliamentary seats in the constituencies they previously lost. He also expressed optimism that the party will be able to secure 14 out of the 18 parliamentary seats in the Northern Region.
