The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a female student by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, calling for a thorough investigation and prosecution if the allegation is established.
In a press statement dated October 16, 2026, and signed by its president, Rashid Ibrahim, the union described the allegation as deeply troubling, stressing that school authorities are expected to protect students rather than expose them to harm.
NUGS called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the relevant investigative authorities to act swiftly and conduct an impartial investigation into the matter.
The union also urged authorities to protect the affected student from intimidation and victimisation, provide her with the necessary counselling and support, and safeguard her identity and dignity throughout the process.
“If investigations establish that the allegation is true, we call for the headmaster to be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of Ghana,” the statement said.
The union maintained that no individual should be exempt from the law because of their position or office, adding that administrative sanctions should not replace criminal prosecution where criminal conduct is established.
The development follows the interdiction of the school’s headmaster by the GES pending investigations into the allegations. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has also called for a police investigation.
NUGS raises concern over sexual abuse in schools
Beyond the incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, NUGS said the allegation highlighted a wider problem of sexual harassment, intimidation and abuse of authority affecting female students in senior high schools and tertiary institutions.
It said some of these incidents involved individuals entrusted with students’ care, insisting that no student should have to endure sexual abuse or harassment to pursue an education.
The union urged the Ghana Education Service and tertiary institutions to strengthen reporting mechanisms for sexual abuse and ensure students could report misconduct without fear of retaliation.
It further called for reports of sexual misconduct to be taken seriously and addressed promptly.
NUGS expressed solidarity with the affected student and others who had experienced sexual harassment or abuse, including those who had remained silent out of fear.
The union stressed that schools and universities must be safe environments where students feel respected and protected.
