The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has formally notified the public and business owners that registered business names which remain unrenewed will be cancelled and struck from the official register after 17 January 2027.

In a notice dated 4 November 2026 and released for immediate publication, the Registrar stated that all registered business names are required by law to be renewed annually upon expiry of their registration.

The notice which was issued by the Registrar of Companies said the Office has observed that a significant number of names currently on the register have not been renewed as required.

“NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that all business names which are not renewed on or before 17th January, 2027 shall be deemed lapsed and shall accordingly be removed from the Register maintained by the Office,” the statement reads.

“Once removed, a cancelled business name ceases to exist. Any person who continues to trade under such a name will be operating in breach of the law and will be liable to the applicable sanctions.

Business owners whose names are due or already expired are advised to take immediate action by renewing their business names at any office of the Registrar of Companies or through the USSD code *222#; paying all outstanding renewal fees and updating any changes in particulars, including address or nature of business”.

The statement further warned that “owners who no longer intend to continue operating under a registered name may notify the Registrar in writing so that the name can be formally removed from the register.”

The ORC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring compliance with Ghana’s corporate regulatory framework and to promoting high standards of corporate governance and business transparency.
