Ofosu Ampofo meant Criticise Peace Council chair, not beat him – Mahama

Former President John Mahama appears to have confirmed  the alleged claims made on the leaked audio recording involving the National Chairman of the NDC Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

Mr. Mahama told the congregation at the Perez chapel, where the NDC executives had gone for a thanksgiving service following their presidential primaries Sunday, that Mr. Ofosu Ampofo’s claims towards the Peace Council chairman has been misconstrued by the public.

“… In the circumstances, I mean, of course, for our Chairman, who had witnessed the violence – the guy whose leg was shot, the bone had shattered and the bone fragments were lying on the ground – anybody who saw it will be traumatised. And, so, if a few days after he [Ofosu-Ampofo] was talking and said: ‘we should attack the Peace Council Chairman’, he didn’t mean we should go and beat the Peace Council Chairman, he meant that we should criticise him”.

This admission comes after the NDC had vehemently denied that the comment was made by their chairman, instead, claiming the audio had been doctored.

In the leaked audio, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo told party communicators that “we’re going to take her [EC boss] to the cleaners.”

“As for the EC chair, we must wage a relentless war on this EC chair. Me, she doesn’t want to see my face,” Ofosu-Ampofo allegedly said at the meeting which took place after the Ayawaso by-election.

As part of strategic communication plans for the NDC going into the 2020 elections, Ofosu-Ampofo also gave his blessings for the communicators to verbally attack the Peace Council chairman Professor Emmanuel Asante.

A statement by the Police CID said Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo must report at the CID Headquarters in Accra on Thursday to help with investigations.

Meanwhile, the NDC has strongly denied contents of the leaked tape saying that the statements and attributions contained on the said tape are concocted and false and “inconsistent with the character and track record of Chairman Ofosu Ampofo and do not reflect the values he has always stood for.”

According to the party, “the maliciously depraved and clearly doctored tape has been contrived by some devious elements in the NPP and government to undermine the NDC and its National Chairman.”
