The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has intensified operations to identify and apprehend individuals involved in a violent disturbance and the unlawful discharge of firearms at the Onion Market at Adjen Kotoku in the Amasaman Municipality.
The incident has also led to a significant security response to restore order in the busy trading hub.
According to a statement from the police, the disturbance stems from deep-seated friction between five distinct onion sellers’ associations.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the groups clashed over disagreements regarding the distribution of onion supplies provided by foreign traders.
This escalated into a physical confrontation on April 6, 2026, during which multiple gunshots were fired from an unidentified location within the market.
The shooters, however, managed to flee before they could be traced by the Police dispatched to the area to restore calm.
Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, has however issued a stern caution to the public regarding the use of violence to settle commercial disputes insisting that unlawful use of firearms will not be tolerated and urged all aggrieved parties to seek resolution through lawful channels.
