Police roll out road closures, traffic diversions ahead of State funeral

The Ghana Police Service has announced road closures and traffic diversions in Accra ahead of Friday’s State Funeral for the August 6 helicopter crash victims.

The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of road closures and traffic diversions in Accra ahead of the State Funeral for victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash. The funeral will be held at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.

In a statement signed by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the Police said the traffic arrangements are to ensure safety and smooth movement around the venue.

Road closures will affect the following areas:

  • 28th February Road (CEPS Traffic Light to Castle Road Junction)
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street
  • Castle Road (AU Roundabout to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light)
  • Starlet 91 Road (Ministries Traffic Light Intersection)

Traffic Diversions

Diversions have been created for motorists.

  • Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road towards the Central Business District and Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street.
  • Motorists from Lokko Street, Osu, towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.
  • Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.
  • Traffic from the AU Circle towards Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted to Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to join Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Parking Areas

Parking will be strictly regulated. Only vehicles with VVIP stickers will access the Black Star Square. Other designated parking areas

  • Forecourt of the State House
  • International Conference Centre
  • Access Bank Car Park
  • Osu Cemetery Car Park
  • Accra Sports Stadium Car Park
  • Ministries Area
  • Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park
  • Marine Drive Football Park
  • Afua Sutherland Car Park

The Police cautioned that unauthorized parking will not be tolerated, adding that towing trucks will be on standby to remove abandoned or wrongly parked vehicles.

The August 6 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrufuom claimed eight lives, among them former Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Two victims were earlier buried in line with Islamic tradition, while the remaining six will receive full military honours at Friday’s State Funeral.
