President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), which takes place in Yokohama from August 20–22, 2025.
The President touched down in Tokyo aboard Emirates flight EK 318 and was received by Ghana’s Ambassador to Japan, embassy officials, and representatives of the host government. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation.

TICAD, first launched in 1993, has grown into a major global platform for advancing Africa’s development.
The summit is spearheaded by the Government of Japan in partnership with the United Nations (UN), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), African Union Commission (AUC), and the World Bank.
It emphasizes African ownership of its development priorities while fostering stronger international partnerships.

This year’s conference will bring together African heads of state, Japanese leaders, development partners, and global investors to explore strategies for accelerating the continent’s economic transformation.
Key agenda items include sustainable industrialization, healthcare innovation, investment in human capital, and climate-resilient infrastructure. The event will also feature the prestigious Fifth Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize awards ceremony.
President Mahama is expected to showcase Ghana’s commitment to inclusive growth, regional integration, and investment-friendly reforms.

He will also engage in bilateral meetings with Japanese leaders and potential investors to strengthen cooperation in areas such as energy, manufacturing, and agriculture.
The outcomes of the summit are expected to shape the trajectory of Africa-Japan cooperation for the next three years while contributing to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
