Concerns over rising indiscipline in Ghana’s schools are once again in the spotlight, as education stakeholders attribute the growing trend to external influences, particularly social media.

The issue has come into sharp focus at the ongoing 2 day training programme being organised for Assistant Headteachers and Headmistresses in the Western Region by the Regional Education Secretariat in collaboration with the Komenda College of Education.

Principal of the Komenda College of Education, Very Reverend Professor Kwesi Nkum Wilson, identified social media as a major contributory factor to the growing levels of indiscipline among students.

“We are in what is often described as the Gen Z era, and they come with their own unique characteristics. I recall that, growing up, we engaged in a lot of physical activities, jumping, playing football, and so on… now with the onslaught of Artificial Intelligence, we expect heads of institutions to possess the requisite skills to manage them effectively as there will always be a generational gap ; however , we are professionals, and we must bring our professionalism to bear,” he underscored.

Also speaking at the event, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Applied Behavioral Science in Education, Professor Patricia Mawusi Amos, underscored that addressing hooliganism in schools must not be left to teachers alone.

“I would not say that nothing is being done, and we cannot shift responsibility to any particular group. We all must be involved as stakeholders to effectively play our roles.” She emphasised.

Speaking on the training, the Western Regional Director of Education, Emmanuel Essuman, described it as timely and necessary:

“We are currently facing 21st-century challenges, particularly the growing issue of indiscipline among students in our schools. It became necessary, therefore, to bring our assistants together and equip them with modern, practical solutions to help address these challenges and better manage student behaviour.” He posited.
