Police have retrieved three state-owned vehicles allegedly taken by former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, as part of ongoing investigations into suspected financial impropriety and asset misappropriation during his tenure.
The vehicles were recovered on Monday, June 30, following Jumah’s arrest the previous day in Kumasi, where he was picked up by police while celebrating his birthday at a private residence.
He was initially held at the Ashanti Regional Police Command before being transferred to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra for further questioning.
Confirming the latest development at a media briefing, the Director-General of the CID, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, stated that Jumah’s arrest was based on a petition submitted by GIHOC Distilleries, alleging that the former MD had unlawfully retained company vehicles after leaving office.
“”Mr. Maxwell Kofi Juma was arrested based on a petition that was submitted to us by the GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited. We received a petition to the effect that some vehicles which were the property of that company had been stolen by the said Maxwell Kofi Juma. Warrants for arrest was properly secured and that was the basis for which he was arrested and he’s in our custody at the CID headquarters and is assisting with investigation,” DCOP Donkor explained.
She added that three of the missing vehicles had been successfully retrieved as part of the investigations.
Jumah is currently assisting the CID with inquiries as efforts continue to recover any remaining assets and establish the full extent of the alleged misconduct.
She added, “I must mention that this afternoon we have retrieved three vehicles, so the said vehicles that were stolen by him have been retrieved. So he’s really assisting us with the investigation and then we will take it up from there.”
This latest development follows an earlier operation on May 15, during which security operatives attempted to retrieve state-owned vehicles from Jumah’s residence. At the time, he was reportedly not present.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided in due course.
