The construction of three (3) mechanized boreholes has stopped residents of Koransang Kese and Anumasang communities in Suhum municipality from drinking from polluted surface water.
Before the execution of the Ghc30, 000 borehole projects by the NGO- Africa Assistance Plan (AAP) and its partner Living Water International-USA, the health of residents including pregnant women and children were in danger due to frequent infestations of waterborne diseases.
The communities had existed without access to the potable drinking water supply as an effort to get the government’s intervention chronically became futile. The plight of the people worsens during the dry season as the river in the communities virtually dries up.
Media reports on the plight of the residents got the NGO to intervene.
Speaking to Starr News after commissioning the Project, the Country Director for Africa Assistance Plan NGO, Rose Mida Offei Asare said the NGO’s vision is to help eradicate Guinea worm infestation and other waterborne diseases in the country hence the intervention.
She said access to safe drinking water is critical to the achievement of many of the sustainable development goals, therefore, appealed to government to collaborate with the NGO to provide safe drinking water to millions of Ghanaians in dire need of water at a lesser cost.
The Chiefs and people of the beneficiary communities were elated for having access to clean water for the first time.
The Odikro, Nana Amo Okanta, assured the NGO of the high maintenance of the facilities to ensure longevity.
