The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Charles Abani has pledged the international organisation’s support to President-elect John Mahama and his incoming administration.
The UN top diplomat, who paid a courtesy call on Mr. Mahama said his outfit will furnish the team with documents that will assist it in running the country when it takes over next month.
“We are proposing in January to provide a very high-level meeting priority document to yourself and your cabinet, as well as detailed priorities to all ministers once you appoint these, to enable you to guide that process, both in terms of long-term issues as well as more immediate things that need to be addressed.
“And to assure you that the United Nations stands fully with you and fully with Ghana through your presidency that is just about to unfold,” Mr. Abani who led the UN delegation said.
He used the occasion to applaud Mr. Mahama for a successful campaign that would lead to the historic elevation of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman to the nation’s second highest office.
The diplomat said in an election during which “the international community has its eyes on Ghana,” the country had shown itself to be “beacon of democracy, defender of democracy and a defender of transparency”.
Since he was officially declared winner of the 2024 presidential election, Mr. Mahama has been meeting delegations at his office that have called on him with goodwill messages.
