A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has taken a swipe at former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo for resigning from the Council of State, describing her decision as inconsistent with the responsibilities of the position.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s Morning Show, GhToday on Monday, Suhuyini questioned the propriety of Akuffo’s actions, particularly her participation in Council decisions followed by her subsequent resignation and testimony.
“A former Chief Justice ought to know better…you sit in council meetings, take decisions with your colleagues, whether you agree or disagree with those decisions, they become binding decisions of that of the council.
“Yet you accepted to be part of that decision, whether you voted for or against or abstained, you participated in the decision whether or not a prima facie determination had been made against the former Chief Justice, based on which the President proceeded to act,” he said.
He added that former Chief Justice Akuffo later became “the first person to become leading witnesses for the said suspended Chief Justice before the commission of inquiry, when you were part of the higher body that established that prima facie case against her.”
While acknowledging Akuffo’s judicial record, Suhuyini expressed reservations about her commitment to national interest.
“She’s an excellent judge, and she has been when she was on the bench. Great. But when it comes to the national interest, I have always had my reservations and I will demonstrate why,” he stated.
Suhuyini further claimed that the only time the former Chief Justice had been seen demonstrating publicly was when her personal benefits were at stake, referencing her involvement in opposition to the government’s domestic debt exchange programme, which he said affected bondholders with a “haircut.”
The NDC Communication team members comments come amid ongoing public discourse surrounding the suspension of the Chief Justice and the subsequent commission of inquiry.
Akuffo’s resignation from the Council of State has drawn mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a principled stand while others, like Suhuyini, see it as a contradiction of her earlier official duties.
