The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining in the Western Region, conducting a major operation on Monday, October 6, in Aboso’s notorious “Gangway” enclave within the Prestea-Huni Valley District.
This was announced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications in a social media post.
According to him, the operation targeted galamsey hideouts and criminal dens that had long served as bases for illegal mining, drug abuse, and gambling.
Several makeshift structures were torched, and galamsey equipment destroyed.
He explained that hundreds of residents, mostly illegal miners and individuals engaged in related vices, surrendered to the Task Force during the raid. Eleven parcels of Indian hemp and other narcotic substances were also seized.
This latest operation comes after a similar raid in June 2025, during which NAIMOS warned criminal gangs and galamseyers to vacate the area – warnings that were largely ignored.
While heading to the Gangway enclave, the Task Force also conducted operations in the Dadwen-Domping area of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, where 15 water pumping machines and a generator set were confiscated.
Three chanfangs and other illegal mining structures were also destroyed.
Mr. Ofosu reiterated government commitment to sustaining nationwide anti-galamsey efforts and restoring law and order in affected mining communities.
